Microsoft security research disclosed a set of attacks observed since May 2026: attackers impersonate IT support, using phone calls, texts, or internal messages to create urgency, tricking employees into visiting fake login pages or completing device code authorization on real Microsoft pages. Once they have a session, attackers add their own MFA methods and use Microsoft Graph, SharePoint, OneDrive, and email for ongoing reconnaissance and data exfiltration.
Why it matters
Passkeys and MFA raise the technical bar, but they can't stop users from authorizing access themselves under a convincing script. What's more dangerous is that adding authentication methods turns a one-time session hijack into a persistent entry point, while low-and-slow, scattered data reads can blend in with normal office traffic.
