If AI Can Solve the Math, What Is Left to Learn?
AI can reach Olympiad gold without making learning obsolete; it changes the level humans need to train for.
In 2025, an advanced version of Gemini Deep Think solved five of six International Mathematical Olympiad problems within the 4.5-hour competition limit. It earned 35 points, a gold-medal score.
That result can make a student wonder why they should keep struggling with mathematics. A saved essay pushes this feeling all the way to “mathematics no longer exists.” I think the useful move is to separate competition results, learning, and research.
Winning a contest does not invalidate learning
The conditions changed sharply in one year. In 2024, AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 solved four of six problems for a silver-medal result. Experts first translated the problems into formal languages, and some computations took up to three days. In 2025, Gemini read the natural-language problems and finished within the contest window.
This shows rapid progress in tools. It does not show that learning mathematics has become nothing more than racing a tool.
Learning still trains at least three layers: understanding what the problem gives you, knowing why a step is valid, and seeing whether a conclusion survives when the assumptions change. If a person skips those layers, a proof-looking answer is still an object they cannot evaluate.
Better tools increase the need to question
In February 2026, DeepMind described Aletheia, an agent for research-level mathematics. Its workflow does not stop after generating an answer. A verifier accepts correct candidates, sends minor flaws for revision, and rejects critical errors for a restart. Mathematicians and scientists still help frame problems and judge the significance of results.
That makes mathematical understanding more relevant, not less. A user who cannot read a proof is poorly equipped to notice what a verifier missed. A user who does not understand the problem cannot tell whether a polished answer solved the right one.
I do not need to beat AI at calculation, just as I do not need to beat a calculator at multiplication. I do need to know what I asked, what the answer depends on, and where doubt belongs.
The old goal of placing humans and machines on the same speed leaderboard may disappear. Mathematics does not. What remains is slower and harder to outsource: understanding, questioning, and deciding what deserves belief.
